Supported Projects

AFILIATYS' political priorities

AFILIATYS' priorities revolve around three main areas:

  • Social, including the fight against poverty and exclusion.

  • Humanitarian.

  • Cultural.

2024 report

With nearly €92,000 in contributions, the amount of aid provided by AFILIATYS in the medical field and in the fight against poverty in 2024 remains very close to the amount disbursed in 2023.

Support for Medical Research

Following the same logic as last year, we kept dedicating most of our support to medical research, raising our contribution to nearly €59,500 for two Belgian associations dedicated to cancer research, two Belgian hospital institutions active in this field, as well as the Alzheimer Foundation and Covid Espoir and a French association dedicated to medical research on long Covid.

Support to Associations Assisting the Sick and Disabled

Once again, AFILIATYS supported the Muco Kikko Cup event organized by a group of families affected by cystic fibrosis. We also provided support to the association Vrienden der Blinden for the training of guide dogs for the blind in Flanders, bringing the total contribution in this category to approximately €7,400.

Fight Against Poverty and Social Exclusion

For this priority, AFILIATYS contributed €23,500 in donations to:

  • the Le Soir Christmas Campaign to provide toys for underprivileged children;

  • the association Darkness into Light, dedicated to preventing youth suicide;

  • the Fondation de France, in support of victims of the cyclone in Mayotte;

  • the CAP 48 initiative, supporting children living in poverty.

As for our actions under our partnership with GIVE EUR HOPE, an NGO of colleagues promoting solidarity with people living in poverty, we co-financed 700 technical t-shirts for the 214 running teams registered under the DG HR "Be Well" program for the Ekiden relay marathon.

This enabled us to encourage 1,284 colleagues and their families to take part in sports activities that benefit their own health, while contributing to the financing of two poverty-fighting projects:

  • the first, to help furnish a shelter run by the “Association Réfugiés Bienvenue” in the suburbs of Paris;

  • the second, to create a sustainable vegetable garden project with its irrigation systems, led by Malem-Auder in Wandé, Sénégal, supported by EU Can Aid, the association of EU institutions colleagues which funds sustainable development projects in developing countries.

2023 Report

In 2023, AFILIATYS allocated nearly €94,000 to initiatives in the medical field and the fight against poverty. For the latter our partner GIVE EUR HOPE also contributed approximately €7,750 in co-financing through donations and contributions from colleagues in the European institutions.

Support for Medical Research

As in previous years, AFILIATYS supported the two Belgian associations dedicated to cancer research and the Alzheimer Foundation with a total of €24,000.

Support to Associations Assisting the Sick and Disabled

As committed in 2022, AFILIATYS continued to help the Armenian Medical Association in Belgium by contributing to the purchase of medical equipment for a field hospital operating in Armenia. This year again we supported the Muco Kikko Cup event organized by families affected by cystic fibrosis. Lastly, in the cultural field, we contributed to the National Theatre of Wallonia’s production of a play performed by actors with disabilities. Altogether, our contributions in this area amounted to over €12,000.

Fight Against Poverty and Social Exclusion

This year, AFILIATYS provided €51,000 in support of:

  • Viva for Life campaign by RTBF, aiding associations that fight child poverty;

  • Le Soir Christmas Campaign to provide toys for underprivileged children;

  • 12 Hours for Greece, to help heat schools in Northern Greece;

  • Restos du Cœur, facing increasing demand to serve meals and provide school supplies at the start of the academic year.

As for our collaboration with GIVE EUR HOPE, the actions included:

  • co-financing a repair vehicle for agricultural and forestry machinery in remote mountain villages in the Western Rhodopes for the Bio-B-Eco Association in Borino, Bulgaria;

  • co-financing a van for transport and moving services to help Les Compagnons Dépanneurs support disadvantaged families in Walloon Brabant;

  • co-financing 500 technical t-shirts for volunteer runners registered with the DG HR “Be Well” program, to encourage them to participate to the Ekiden relay marathon and to contribute to the funding of a poverty alleviation project in the European Union or sustainable development initiatives in third countries.

Humanitarian

Following the catastrophic floods in the summer of 2021, AFILIATYS provided support of €26,000 to the Red Cross branches in Belgium and Germany, and to a group of colleagues from the EU institutions who volunteered to assist flood victims in the Belgian Ardennes.

In addition, after the devastating fires on the island of Euboea in Greece during the same summer, AFILIATYS provided €10,000 in aid to the Rovies Farmers' Cooperative to rebuild the oil press vital for the social and economic well-being of local farmers. Simultaneously, our partner, GIVE EUR HOPE, supported the Argo Solidarity Medical Association for Greece with €3,000 to rebuild the Kalamoudi Health Center.
